ALTURAS, Calif. (KRCR) — The Modoc National Forest and Bureau of Land Management have horses in need of new homes. Modoc National Forest has 50 horses of the 375 horses that were gathered in 2020 and held at the Double Devil Wild Horse Corrals available for adoption.
The BLM Litchfield Corrals also has Devil’s Garden Horses available for adoption. For more information on how to adopt from the BLM, email wildhorse@blm.gov or call 866-468-7826.
A recent aerial census in and around the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory estimated the current population at 1,926 adult wild horses.
“This year’s census shows the population is still more than the appropriate management level of 206-402 adult wild horses,” said Forest Supervisor Chris Christofferson. “That is still about five times more than what the habitat can support while also providing for all the other mixed uses we are charged with managing.”
The forest plans to gather wild horses from the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory again this fall to continue moving toward the appropriate management level. Reducing the population helps address impacts on aquatic resources, wildlife, grazing and other traditional cultural practices.
A virtual meeting is scheduled for June 10, 2021, at 4 p.m. to provide updates on planning for the gather this fall and accept public comments about the use of helicopters and other motorized vehicles during gather operations.
