A Texas man will undergo surgery Thursday, which marks four days after he said he and his dog were attacked by a suspect wielding a Samurai sword.

Casey Cabbiness said someone broke into hisAmarillo home while he was asleep on Sunday around 3:50 a.m. EDT.

He said the suspect is one of his friends.

A close friend, like hang out with him two or three times a week for the last year," said Cabbiness.

Cabbiness said he was severely injured when he grabbed the sword to defend himself.

"So, the tendon that controls this middle joint, your IP joint, that tendon is severed and the nerve that nerves that, all of that is messed up as well," said Cabbiness.

The suspect was in the backyard when police arrived. He refused to cooperate, so they shot him with a stun gun.

Both men were taken to the hospital.

The suspect was released but has not yet been arrested.

Cabbiness has to have surgery followed by months of rehab.

The rehab starts pretty soon after surgery," said Cabbiness. "They'll probably have me in there three times a week moving my hand around and moving my thumb around almost immediately after surgery for, like, nine or 12 weeks. It's a pretty extensive surgery. They said the surgery is about 20 percent of the success and the rest is the rehab and your dedication to getting better."

Casey said he doesn’t have insurance, so a friend set up a GoFundMe account to help with medical expenses.

To see all the people who have given me money and reached out to me has been pretty crazy,” said Cabbiness. “I had no idea I had so much support and people who cared about me. It's been a really humbling experience."
