NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reported Thursday that in just over the first two months of 2023, 217 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Music City.
According to a news releaseput out by the department, there have been a total of 262 firearms thefts in the county this year. Thus, the rampant swiping of guns from cars accounts for 76% of the total thefts of firearms this year,
MNPD 19 guns were stolen from vehicles in the last week alone.
Authorities also warned that the high numbers of gun thefts – especially those taken from vehicles – goes hand-in-hand with a rise in cars thefts, but specifically due to lax security measures and vigilance on the part of owners.
According to police, 60% (30 out of 50) of car thefts in Nashville over the previous week occurred because owners left their keys in their vehicles, or similarly made them unintentionally available to carjackers.
