The Birmingham Police Department said a 4-year-old girl was shot while in a car in North Avondale on Wednesday night. The girl was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said a woman was driving down Messer Airport Highway near Tom Brown Village when she heard gunshots. Her daughter said she had been shot.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the girl to Children's of Alabama. According to an update from Sgt. Monica Law on Thursday afternoon, the victim is alert and still being treated at the hospital.
Law said a person of interest has been located and is currently under investigation.
